Recipe: Sydney's Charli XCX-Inspired Apple Churro Rings

Recipe: Sydney's Charli XCX-Inspired Apple Churro Rings

"Apple," a song that was – according to Charli XCX – never supposed to make the Brat album, is everywhere. It prompted a viral dance on TikTok, comparisons to quotes from Kamala Harris and Frederick Nietzsche, and confirmed pop music's capacity to convey a deep, philosophical musing.

With the launch of the Wildflower x Charli XCX collaboration case, it only felt right that Sydney shared her favorite apple recipe. The relationship between the Carlson sisters and Charli runs deep, with the singer even tapping Devon Lee to star in the "Speed Drive" music video after name-checking her in the Barbie Soundtrack song. These Apple Churro Rings, like Charli herself, are imperfectly perfect – quick, easy, and totally delicious – because sweet treats should never be taken too seriously. You might find yourself finishing the whole plate.

SYDNEY'S APPLE CHURRO RINGS

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3-4 honey crisp apples
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Canola oil for frying

Instructions:

1. Prepare the batter:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, 2 1/2 tbsp sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, beat the egg and add the vanilla and milk. Mix well.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

2. Prepare the apples:

  1. Peel the apples and core them (you can use an apple corer or cut a hole in each slice.
  2. Slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick rings.

3. Prepare the coating:

  1. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

4. Fry the apple rings:

  1. Heat canola oil in a deep skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Dip each apple ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off.
  3. Carefully place the battered apple rings into the hot oil, a few at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
  4. Fry the apple rings for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  5. Using a slotted spoon, remove the apple rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  6. Alternatively, fry in your air fryer at  350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.

5. Coat with cinnamon sugar:

  1. While the apple rings are still warm, toss them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until evenly coated.

    6. serve:

    1. Serve the apple churro rings warm and to the soundtrack of 'Apple,' by Charli XCX.

    Hot tips:

    • Make sure the oil is at the right temperature before frying. Too hot, and the batter will burn; too cool, and the rings will absorb too much oil.
    • For extra flavor, you can drizzle the apple churro rings with caramel sauce or serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
    • Missing the perfect cookware? Take a pan out of Sydney's kitchen with the Lynnee  ceramic coated non-toxic aluminum skillet.
    • To really bring the Brat energy, take a picture of your Apple Churro Rings with your Charli-XCX x Wildflower phone. Enjoy!
